The silver markings on the underside of this bowl indicate that it was manufactured by J. Winhart & Co. for whom Vierthaler was a lead designer, while the innovative design and material reveals that Vierthaler was, indeed, moonlighting. The bowl’s stylized patterns and radial ridges in bright blue, turquoise, green, gold and vermillion enamels strongly suggest an awareness of the work of designer and metalworker, Eugen Ehrenbock, and anticipate their subsequent collaboration and partnership which earned them much critical success in 1906. Vierthaler carries the intricate Egyptian motif throughout this exquisite piece from the basket weave pattern in bronze and silver on the bowl’s exterior to the vibrant lotus flower and ovoid shapes, reminiscent of Pharaonic headwear from Lower Egypt, on the bowl’s interior.
